Rogue Hazelnut Brown Nectar

Rogue Hazelnut Brown Nectar

Rogue Brewery, out of the great northwest in Portland is one of the more well known of the craft breweries and make a wide varieties of beer. This beer has been an Extended Pints favorite for a while now. The NEK-TAR is “our” beer. When we saw it available from our friends over at Cranbury Buy Rite on tap we jumped on the chance to review it. Will the legend that is the NEK-TAR hold up on draft?

WOW, is really all that needs to be said, but as this is a review, it can’t be. The brilliant copper color, the big hazel-hop smell, the hazelnut coffee/ brown ale flavor on this is everything I could ever want in a beer.  It starts off with a very strong hazel-hop flavor and finishes so smooth. The first sip is fantastic, but it goes down hill from there… Only because you know you are closing in on the bottom of the glass and the end of this amazing beer. The flavor is so much more complete and defined on tap compared to the bottle. This is one of the most easy drinking and complete beers I have ever had. If I were to only be given 1 beer to have for the rest of my days, I would choose this one, and that decision is not a hard one at all.

1 Liter Stone Growler

As mentioned in the intro, I have had this beer before. One of my faults in life is that sometimes I try something for the first time and love it, and then when I come back to it again, my mind has built up an impossible expectation of how good that thing will be… That was my reaction to the Hazelnut Brown Nectar this time round. With that being said, I still really enjoyed it. I felt that the hazelnut flavor came through in different, more subtle ways than I remembered. Also, the consistency seemed to be much thinner and closer to what you would expect of a brown ale, and less like a porter. The hazelnut came through in different ways between the initial smell, the beginning of the sip, and then the finish. The balance of the Nectar was what really made me enjoy this beer the most though. Nothing jumped out, and nothing was missing. When having this beer the first time, I was afraid that the hazelnut flavor would be overwhelming and would slap me in the face… I couldn’t have been more wrong. This is a really great beer, and I recommend it highly!

The Nectar just makes me happy. That said, I’m not typically a fan of brown ales. However, this brew is a huge exception. The color was a rich brown/copper that seemed to glow with the nutty radiance of the elixir of the gods. Okay, I’m being dramatic, but this beer is special. It is a representation of  the most fun times that Extended Pints has had together. I could taste the beer just by looking at it. With a creamy foam head, I took a good long hazelnut-infused whiff before indulging in the sip. The taste had a bit of a rich brown ale flavor with that explosion of hazelnut that gave way to some roasted notes and even some bitterness. Rogue made this intense hazelnut-flavored beer that I think is balanced well enough to allow most beer lovers to enjoy it. So, get it. If you can get in on tap, even better.

We picked this up in a new Stone 1 liter Growler, which you can also get from our sponsor  Cranbury Buy Rite.
