Spring is coming (according to the calendar it’s already here, but the weather respectfully disagrees) and with it a bevy of spring beers. The packaging changes from the darker muted colors of the winter warmers and is replaced by the bright pastel colors of spring. The Aprihop is a perfect example of that change with it’s lime and orange packaging that can’t help but catch your eye. Dogfish Head describes the Aprihop as their fruit beer for hopheads. Since I am not a hophead, I was a bit worried.
It pours a nice deep amber color with an off white head. There is a good hop aroma with earthy undertones. There is no mistake about it upon first taste, this is a DFH beer. There is a solid maltiness on the backbone of the flavor, with the apricots sweetness to compliment it. As the beer disappears, the sweetness from the apricots are beginning to jump to the front of the flavor. I was expecting the apricot smell to be more prominent and was even a little worried that it might be too sweet. Both concerns were alleviated with the first taste. There is a good hop taste to appeal to the hopheads, but it is also balanced enough for the non hopheads to enjoy. I am reminded of the peach ring candy as I enjoy this very drinkable 7.0% beer.
I only purchased 1 bottle for this review but I wish that I had gone ahead and gotten the entire 4 pack. I want another Aprihop because I feel, as I near the end of the glass , that the beer is just starting to reveal all that it has to offer.
